Mineral: Sense of self
Strengthening your sense of self by separating your identity from your current situation is the first step to healing. Homelessness is an experience, a set back but not a reflection of your character. In many cases, homelessness is not an isolated circumstance but a reflection of deeper and interconnected challenges, such as repeated experiences of trauma, unmet safety and basic needs, co-occurring mental health struggles oftentimes due to the trauma, and harmful coping mechanisms such as substance use. These challenges often develop as responses to prolonged stress, pain, and/or survival experiences, highlighting the importance of addressing the whole person rather than only the visible outcome.
Focus:
-
Recognizing your strengths and abilities
-
Rebuilding confidence and self-worth
-
Identifying your values, dreams, and goals
-
Discovering your personal gifts
-
Reconnecting with positive relationships and community
-
Understanding your story without being defined by hardship
Reflection:
"Who am I beyond what I have been through? What strengths have I always carried? What kind of life do I want to create—not for anyone else, but for me?"
The Mineral element represents the foundation of who you are: your identity, strengths, values, and sense of belonging. Before you can work towards making transformative change, it is important to remember that you are not defined by what you have been through. You carry gifts, resilience, and a story that is still being written.

Sharing stories, listening to others, and realizing you are not alone can restore a sense of belonging and remind you of your strength. These groups provide encouragement, validation, and practical wisdom from people who have walked a similar path.
